Preparing your windows after winter is essential to ensure they are in good condition and ready for the warmer seasons. Here's a checklist to guide you through the process:

1. Inspect Window Frames:

- Check for any signs of damage, such as cracks or rot.

- Repair or replace damaged frames.

2. Clean Window Glass:

- Clean both the interior and exterior of the window glass to remove winter grime and dirt.

- Use a glass cleaner for a streak-free finish.

3. Check Seals and Weatherstripping:

- Inspect seals and weatherstripping for wear and tear.

- Replace any damaged or missing seals to improve energy efficiency.

4. Test Window Operation:

- Open and close each window to ensure smooth operation.

- Lubricate hinges and tracks if necessary.

5. Clean Window Tracks:

- Remove debris and dirt from window tracks.

- Use a vacuum or a small brush to clean out any accumulated grime.

6. Inspect Screens:

- Check window screens for tears or holes.

- Repair or replace damaged screens.

7. Apply Lubricant to Hardware:

- Lubricate window hardware, such as locks and hinges, to prevent rust and ensure smooth operation.

8. Check for Drafts:

- Feel for drafts around windows.

- Use caulk or weatherstripping to seal any gaps or cracks.

9. Inspect Window Sills:

- Check window sills for water damage or rot.

- Repair or replace damaged sills.

10. Clean Window Treatments:

- Clean or wash curtains, blinds, or any other window treatments.

- Check for any damage and repair or replace as needed.

11. Inspect Window Wells:

- If you have basement windows with wells, ensure they are free of debris.

- Check for proper drainage to prevent water accumulation.

12. Test Window Locks:

- Ensure all window locks are functioning properly.

- Replace any faulty locks for security.

13. Clean Exterior:

- Clean the exterior of windows, including frames and sills.

- Consider using a power washer for stubborn dirt.

14. Remove Winter Insulation:

- If you've used any temporary insulation during winter, remove it.

15. Check for Condensation:

- Look for signs of condensation between double-pane windows.

- If present, it may indicate a seal failure; consider replacing the window.

By following this checklist, you can ensure that your windows are clean, well-maintained, and energy-efficient, ready to let in the fresh air of spring and summer.
